Olhão is a fishing village that knows how to adapt to modern times, developing the canning industry and highlighting the natural beauty that surrounds it, attracting thousands of tourists every year and you can also find a wide range of boat trips from Olhão.
In 1378, people first settled in the here and is place and lived in small wooden houses. The residents were fishermen and believers and in 1695 created the church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, a temple where they could pray for divine protection for those who sailed to sea.
Over the years it has gained importance and in 1985 it became a city. And nowadays it deserves to be visited!
All of Olhão’s coast is part of Ria Formosa Natural Park and its islands and marshland are considered to be of interest to the world and are naturally conserved.
This protected area covers a large part of the Algarve’s coast and its variety of landscapes and species does not disappoint its visitors. From white sanded deserted islands with the turquoise sea to marshland areas where animals and man live day-to-day, this algarvian diamond is a rich habitat that can be visited and is very protected since 1987.
The Ria Formosa embraces 5 cities: Loulé, Faro, Olhão, Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António, and each of these cities have a different panoramic view of the park.
There are five natural bars (entrances to the ocean) that make up the islands that we are going to talk about here that are Ilha da Barreta, Ilha da Culatra, Ilha da Armona, Ilha de Tavira and Ilha de Cabanas.
Because it is such a vast area we recommend you take a boat tour as you’d be able to see and photograph the islands and the empty islets distributed throughout the immense transparent sea in this area.
The Algarve is known for its immense natural beauty along the coast and the Ria Formosa, the place where most of the seafood that is a part of its wonderful cuisine comes from, is a place you won’t forget.
From Olhão you can get to Culatra, Farol and Armona. They are all different despite their geographical proximity.
On Culatra you will find a small traditional fishing village by the port and a few tourists while on Armona you will find an aggregation of mostly summer homes, a campsite and water sports facilities.
You’ll have to cross the islands through their middle to get to the seaside and as they contain sand dunes, please use the wooden boardwalks to help protect the vegetation that grows in the sand.
Farol island has a grand lighthouse on the beach and is one of the most popular beaches to local residents. In the summer the holiday homes are filled and there is the scent of barbeques and good moods in the air.
All of these islands are quite popular between April and August, and most visitors arrive by ferry boat. If you don’t want to queue, opt for a private boat trip from Olhão that will drop you off wherever you choose.
